Hula of Forgiveness: Masago Asai

Masago Asai and her family were long-term victims of the nuclear blast over Nagasaki, Japan. Through years of illness and sadness, they have emerged to a complete understanding, and embraced forgiveness as their path. Recognized as a Heroine of Forgiveness in 2007, Masago returns to the annual Hawaii International Forgiveness Day in August, 2015, with no words to speak — but with the silent eloquence and beauty of herself and her two daughters, dancing a traditional hula in recognition of the 70th Anniversary of the atomic bombs over Japan. The setting is appropriate — the oldest church in the Hawaiian Islands, Kawaiaha’o Church in central Honolulu.
