Preparing For the Worst

TURTLE ISLAND is a short, independent natural history documentary based on the Thai island of Koh Tao. Concentrating on the marine ecosystems that surround the island and the stunning diversity of species that they contain, it is a short version of what i one day hope to make into a feature-length broadcast for transmission.

In April 2010 i travelled out to Koh Tao and personally filmed, directed and produced this short documentary because Koh Tao and its waters hold a very special place in my heart. As a professional work placement in 2008 i trained and worked on Koh Tao as an Underwater Videographer for ‘Oceans Below Underwater Video Production’ under my mentors Adrian Kaye and Elisabeth Lauwerys. The experience has given me the drive and ambition to make a career from the practical skills i learnt and has really opened my eyes to the opportunities available if you just put your mind to something and work hard for it.

Koh Tao is a small and beautiful island just off the eastern coast of Thailand and is seen as somewhat of a diving Mecca. Thousands of people flock to the island each year and is a favourite amongst people looking to learn how to dive as it has some stunning but yet relatively easy and shallow dive sites (and some equally as stunning but much deeper ones). The waters surrounding Koh Tao are teeming with tropical fish species and there’s a wealth of diversity to be seen at any of the many dive sites dotted around the tiny island. The sorts of species you’d expect to see range from the tiniest molluscs and reef fish all the way up to the odd sighting of the gorgeous (and my favourite species of them all….) Whale Shark.

I made this short documentary soon after the Gulf of Mexico disaster which saw millions of litres of oil pump into the oceans becoming one of the worlds worst ecological disasters. Our planets’ marine ecosystems are constantly under attack from man-made and natural influences and if we don’t act in a big way NOW then it might just be too late when we do. This documentary is a homage to the stunning show that is our marine ecosystems from coral reefs to the deep blue sea.

**Originally shot all in full HD, this version has had to be rendered in a lower quality to get the file size small enough for me to be able to upload onto the internet (under 500MB).
